Are you the type to take in all the worries of the world? I am an empath and I tend to take care of everyone and left feeling drained.

As I get older I’m learning to step back from everyone else’s problems. Why is that relevant? Because it is essential for your mental health, and it actually allows others the space they need to grow. Here is how to stop carrying burdens that aren’t yours: 

  • Implement a “Digital Cleanse”: Give yourself permission to disconnect entirely for a day or even a weekend. Turn off news notifications and consider deleting apps that trigger “doomscrolling”.
  • Shrink Your Circle of Concern: Shift your focus from global issues you cannot control to local, tangible things you can. Spend time on a hobby, tidy your immediate space, or connect with a friend for a non-political conversation.
  • Practice Grounding: Use deep breathing or grounding exercises to signal to your body that you are physically safe in this moment. Spending time in nature for even a short walk can help provide a much-needed perspective shift.
