Part 1
Have you ever worked underneath someone that took their professional title too seriously, or too far? Recently, I had an encounter with one of the lower levels of administration, and it was a situation where it almost took me out of character; I didn’t like that. I tried to resolve the issue on my own, but somehow the Lord interfered to make sure those people disappeared from my sight. So, I decided to take a breather (grab my magnesium spray), go through the proper channels of resolving my issue because had I not, I would have been in the wrong and possibly at the unemployment office.
Which leads me to how do you resolve conflicts when you’ve tried to keep your behavior in check and people misuse their so called “power”?
To handle people who let titles go to their heads, maintain composure, set clear boundaries, communicate respectfully using “I” statements, show empathy (God is still working on me), and be prepared to step away or ignore them if the behavior persists. Validating their emotions can de-escalate tension, while calling out harmful behavior can help ( my AP got them all the way together), as long as it is done respectfully. Remember that true leadership is about actions and uplifting others, not about titles or ego.
Maintain Your Composure
- Stay calm: Responding with anger or frustration will only escalate the situation.
- Avoid stooping to their level: Keep your confidence and composure; smart moves beat superiority.
Set Boundaries and Communicate
- Set clear boundaries: Entitled individuals often push boundaries, so define yours clearly (that was m plan but in an ugly way I’ll be honest).
- Use “I” statements: Express your feelings and thoughts using “I” statements to avoid sounding accusatory, like “I feel disrespected when you speak to me that way”. I’m so glad I have a boss that listened and applied action. She was very professional, but we’ll see if they’ve taken heed.
- Acknowledge their feelings: Validate their emotions to de-escalate the situation and foster productive communication (again He is still working on me).
- Share your story, thoughts, and insights I would love to hear how you handled it.
