. Etiquette is the set of rules and conventions that govern social behavior and interactions. It can vary across cultures, contexts, and situations, but it generally aims to show respect, consideration, and kindness to others. Some people may think that etiquette is outdated or irrelevant in the modern world, but I disagree. I think there are many benefits of teaching and practicing etiquette, such as:
- It instills confidence. When we know how to act appropriately in different situations, we feel more comfortable and self-assured. We also avoid embarrassing ourselves or others by making mistakes or being rude1.
- It makes the best first impression. When we meet someone new, they form an opinion of us based on how we behave and communicate. Having good manners shows that we are polite, respectful, and professional. This can open up many opportunities for us in our personal and professional lives1.
- It promotes effective communication. When we use proper etiquette, we are more likely to listen attentively, speak clearly, and avoid misunderstandings. We also show that we value the other person’s time, opinions, and feelings. This can improve our relationships and collaboration with others2.
- It boosts self-esteem. When we practice good manners, we are more likely to receive positive feedback and appreciation from others. This can make us feel good about ourselves and our abilities. It can also motivate us to improve ourselves and achieve our goals3.
- It creates a positive environment. When we follow etiquette rules, we contribute to a culture of civility and harmony. We reduce conflicts, tensions, and stress in the workplace or in society. We also inspire others to be kind and courteous as well4.
These are just some of the benefits of etiquette. I’m sure we can begin to dive in a plethora of scenarios. . I hope this can jumpstart a conversation on etiquette is important and why we should teach it again.
